Point-of-use reverse osmosis: RO uses a membrane and pressure differential to separate many dissolved constituents from a portion of water supplied to a drinking or cooking tap. Maintenance commonly involves prefilter, postfilter, and membrane replacement, plus attention to storage pressure and drain flow. Feed-water testing is needed because hardness, iron, sediment, disinfectants, and other conditions can affect pretreatment and membrane service. RO generally fits households seeking treatment at a limited number of consumption points rather than every tap. A homeowner can compare a recommended system and quote after supplying the same test results and usage assumptions to each provider.

Whole-home treatment train: This is a scope choice, not a single treatment mechanism. It may combine sediment filtration, oxidation, adsorption, softening, disinfection, or other stages based on the source water. Upkeep therefore depends on every component and may include media service, salt, cleaning, lamp replacement, or verification sampling. Testing should be broad enough to support the proposed sequence and identify conditions that could interfere with downstream equipment. This approach best fits a household whose confirmed problem affects plumbing, bathing, laundry, appliances, or all taps.
